Biomechanics in Ergonomics, Second Edition
Added 1/25/2008
Shrawan Kumar Safety or comfort? Can you truly have one without the other? Is it feasible to have both? Although by no means the only factor, a deep understanding of biomechanics plays a leading role in the design of work and workplaces that are both pain and injury free. Standing firmly on the foundation built by the previous edition, the second edition of Biomechanics in Ergonomics establishes an understanding of gross biomechanical loads on the human system at the tissue level and then brings that understanding through to the whole body level.

Environmental Site Assessment Phase I: Fundamentals, Guidelines, and Regulations, Third Edition
Added 4/4/2008
Kathleen Hess-Kosa Extensively updated to reflect the most recent changes to the All Appropriate Inquiries Rule (the “Rule”) and the ASTM Environmental Site Assessment Standard (the “Standard”), Environmental Site Assessment Phase 1, Third Edition provides a valuable guide to the techniques of performing Phase 1 site assessment. Promoting a better understanding of the rationale and processes necessary to protect those stakeholders associated with a property, this book describes the latest methods used by leaders in the industry and emphasizes the development of an easy-to-follow investigative strategy for performing in-house assessments. Equally informative as an introduction for those new to the field and as a quick reference guide for experienced practitioners, this third edition reviews investigative tools mandated by the Rule, as well as many that are not. It presents the recommended searches pertaining to petroleum and petroleum product concerns as covered by the Standard, and expands on the hazards associated with construction. The author reviews the legal issues involved in the purchase of property and an historic overview provides context and a sense of the evolution of the field. Chapters outline the assessment process from beginning to end in an organized, step-by-step manner. The book describes investigations of the physical setting, historic usage, property and area reconnaissance, building materials, and industrial activities associated with a property. It also gives tips on interviewing, lists regulatory agencies, and considers special resources such as wetlands and buildings with historical value. Whether you are actively involved in the performance of site assessments or simply want to be better informed when purchasing property, Environmental Site Assessment Phase 1, Third Edition is an important resource on a wide range of investigative tools.

Office Ergonomics: Practical Applications
Added 4/4/2008
Céline McKeown Moving from theory into practical reality, ergonomics has come of age as a useful tool for generating safe, comfortable, and productive working environments. Tackling both the simple and complex aspects of a variety of workplaces, Office Ergonomics: Practical Applications demonstrates how to create offices that accommodate all workers. The book contains practical advice on how to maintain an office environment that promotes a healthy, safe, and efficient workforce. Covering workstation design, selection, layout, and use, the book details the impact of computers on worker well-being, particularly when used under unfavorable conditions, and discusses how ergonomics can accommodate disabled workers. The author emphasizes the need to offer ‘protection’ to people involved in manual handling in offices, an issue that is frequently overlooked, and offers advice on how to work satisfactorily in non-office environments. She explores the possible negative outcomes, such as back pain, headaches, and upper limb disorders, of a poorly designed workstation. Walking you through all the features of an office, the book provides insight into the potential problem areas that workers often encounter. The book explains how to identify suitable workstation furniture, test it, trial it, and introduce the final selection so the workforce accepts it. The author draws on first-hand experience dealing with difficulties in many types of office situations to provide straightforward, easily applicable advice on how to improve the workplace to reduce the likelihood of workers experiencing discomfort, ill-health, and dissatisfaction.

International Encyclopedia of Ergonomics and Human Factors, Second Edition - 3 Volume Set
Added 4/4/2008
Waldemar Karwowski The previous edition of the International Encyclopedia of Ergonomics and Human Factors made history as the first unified source of reliable information drawn from many realms of science and technology and created specifically with ergonomics professionals in mind. It was also a winner of the Best Reference Award 2002 from the Engineering Libraries Division, American Society of Engineering Education, USA, and the Outstanding Academic Title 2002 from Choice Magazine. Not content to rest on his laurels, human factors and ergonomics expert Professor Waldemar Karwowski has overhauled his standard-setting resource, incorporating coverage of tried and true methods, fundamental principles, and major paradigm shifts in philosophy, thought, and design. Demonstrating the truly interdisciplinary nature of this field, these changes make the second edition even more comprehensive, more informative, more, in a word, encyclopedic.
Keeping the format popularized by the first edition, the new edition has been completely revised and updated. Divided into 13 sections and organized alphabetically within each section, the entries provide a clear and simple outline of the topics as well as precise and practical information. The book reviews applications, tools, and innovative concepts related to ergonomic research. Technical terms are defined (where possible) within entries as well as in a glossary. Students and professionals will find this format invaluable, whether they have ergonomics, engineering, computing, or psychology backgrounds. Experts and researchers will also find it an excellent source of information on areas beyond the range of their direct interests.

Microorganisms in Home and Indoor Work Environments: Diversity, Health Impacts, Investigation and Control
Added 6/30/2008
Brian Flannigan, Robert Samson, J. David Miller Despite the large amount of money spent on research into pollution of the indoor environment, the problem remains complex with major gaps in our knowledge of the identities and sources of pollutants and of the effects of prolonged exposure to indoor pollutants on health. Microorganisms in Home and Indoor Work Environments considers one such group of pollutants, namely microorganisms, and more particularly heterotrophic bacteria and fungi. Although our understanding of microorganisms in the home and indoor work environment has accelerated in the last decade, fully elucidating their effects on human health has been plagued by problems of accurate assessment of exposure to microorganisms and precise identification of those present in the environment. This book provides a comprehensive review of the types of microorganism in outdoor and indoor air, their growth and control in home and work environments, and their role in allergic respiratory disease (such as rhinitis, asthma and occupational hypersensitivity pneumonitis) and respiratory tract infections including tuberculosis and legionnaires' disease. In addition, chapters address the twin problems of exposure assessment and identification, discuss the methodology for and conduction of investigations of indoor environments and provide keys and color illustrations to assist in the identification of almost one hundred mold, yeast and actinomycete contaminants.
